קריאה לממשלת ישראל לקלוט פליטים מהטבח בסוריה

אנו החתומים מטה, אזרחים ישראלים, קוראים לממשלת ישראל לפתוח את גבולה עם סוריה לטובת קליטת פליטים מהזוועות המתרחשות קילומטרים ספורים משטחינו.

בתור מדינה שהוקמה בצל השואה, פוגרומים במזרח אירופה ובמדינות ערב יש לנו  את החובה המוסרית לעזור לשכנינו בעת מצוקה הומאניטארית.

ברור שיש צורך להימנע מעימות צבאי עם משטר אסד בכל מחיר, אבל אין סיבה לא לאפשר לפליטים לעבור את הגדר, וגם אם לא למצוא מקלט בארץ באופן זמני עד אשר יפסק הטבח, להשתמש בישראל כפלטפורמת יציאה למדינות אחרות שיש ביכולתן לקלוט את הפליטים.

לא ייתכן שכמדינה נאורה ודמוקרטית נעמוד מנגד ונאפשר לזוועות המתרחשות בסוריה להתקיים מבלי שום ניסיון להקל על הסבל האנושי שם.

גם בראיה דיפלומטית בטווח הרחוק, מתן מקלט לפליטים סוריים מפני משטר אסד הגוסס יקנה "נקודות זכות" רבות לישראל בעיני הציבור הסורי ומנהיגיו החדשים ויאפשר גישור טוב יותר בשיחות שלום עתידיות.

ברצוננו להדגיש כי זו החלטה שיש לקבל במהרה, כיוון שככל שנחכה איתה יותר כך יפגעו יותר בני אדם בסוריה והמחווה ההומניטארית הזו תהפוך לפחות רלוונטית.

Petition for the Israeli Government to Absorb Syrian Refugees

We, the undersigned Israeli citizens, herby petition the Israeli Government to open its borders with Syria in order to receive refugees from the horrors taking place mere kilometers from our country.

As a country founded under the shadow of the Holocaust, pogroms in Eastern Europe and the Arab nations we possess the moral obligation and duty to help our neighbors in this time of humanitarian crisis.

Clearly we should avoid a military confrontation with Assad's regime at any price, but there is no reason not to allow refugees to cross the fence and, if not to find temporary refuge  in Israel until the massacre stops, then to at least use Israel as a platform to enter countries which do possess the ability to receive them.

It is inconceivable that as an enlightened and democratic country we will be content to stand by and allow the horrors taking place in Syria to continue without attempting to ease the human suffering there.

Giving shelter to Syrian refugees from Assad's dying regime makes sense in a long-term diplomatic perspective as well, as it would "buy Israel points" in the eyes of the Syrian public and its new leaders and would provide better bridging of gaps in future peace talks.

We wish to stress that this is a decision that needs to be taken quickly, as with every passing moment more people are hurt in Syria and this humanitarian gesture would become less relevant.
