An urgent call to our academic colleagues

We, Israelis who are involved in research and teaching in Israeli academic institutions, are calling upon you to react strongly against the annexation plans of the government of Israel and its decision to force Israeli Academia to be an accomplice of annexation consequences.

The government of Israel announced that on July 1 it will begin to annex parts of the West Bank, which is populated by approximately three million Palestinians. The government has already clarified that the Palestinians in the annexed territories will not be accorded Israeli citizenship - a clear declaration of imposing an apartheid de Jure regime.

Adding to that, the Minister of Higher Education, Mr. Zeev Elkin, announced last week that he will replace one of three representatives of the seven Israeli universities (Bar-Ilan U, Ben-Gurion U, Haifa U, Hebrew U, Technion, Tel Aviv U, Weizmann Institute, all inside Israel proper) in the Planning and Budget Committee of Higher Education (PBC, VATAT) by a representative of the military proclaimed university that is located at the midst of occupied Palestinian territory, in the settlement of Ariel.  VATAT consists of only 7 members, decides on all financial support for Israel’s universities and colleges. The other four members have already been appointed by the politically motivated government. The current decision of Minister Elkin converts VATAT into a politically motivated, annexation supportive body.  

We urge you to join us in condemning the Israeli government’s attempts to establish a de Jure apartheid regime in the West Bank and to force Israeli academia to collaborate with that crime.

Be active: call upon your government to react strongly to the Israeli government’s actions.
