Demanding academic freedom in Turkey

We, Israeli academics, are shocked by the recent actions of the President of Turkey Tayyip Erdoğan against academia and academics in Turkey, as well as against other agents of freedom of thought.

We support democracy and oppose any attempt to overthrow a democratically chosen government by military coup or by other means except for elections. If academics have been actively involved in the recent military coup,   that is a case for the judicial system of Turkey.  And only those actively involved persons should be charged and put to trial.

We denounce the actions against academia and  call upon president Erdoğan, the Turkish government and  the Grand National Assembly to reinstate all the deans and other faculty members, as well as all journalists and judges, to refrain from threatening and intimidating them, to commit itself to academic freedom, and to hopefully bring Turkey back to an atmosphere of democracy.
